Year 1

In Year 1 we continue to build upon the firm foundations of learning through play established in the Reception classes.  Children have choice of a wide range of indoor and outdoor continuous provision challenges that they access independently to extend their learning.  These run alongside teaching instruction in small groups or half-class groupings at the beginning of the year.  Later in the year, we work towards more formal, whole-class instruction to prepare children for the challenges ahead in Year 2.  We also work very hard expanding our knowledge of phonic sounds as a basis for reading in preparation for a phonics screening test in June.  Along the way we have lots of fun taking part in inter-school sports competitions, outdoor learning with a qualified instructor, dressing-up days on the themes of Superheroes, Victorians and Pirates and a wonderful visit to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park.
