Low Moor C. of E. Primary School

Year 1

In Year 1, we continue to build upon the firm foundations of learning through play established in the Reception classes.  Children have choice of a wide range of indoor and outdoor continuous provision challenges that they access independently to extend their learning.  These run alongside teaching instruction in small groups or half-class groupings at the beginning of the year.  Later in the year, we work towards more formal, whole-class instruction to prepare children for the challenges ahead in Year 2.  We also work very hard expanding our knowledge of phonic sounds as a basis for reading in preparation for a phonics screening test in June.

Our creative curriculum provides the children with the opportunity to learn in a cross-curricular way, linking subjects and skills.  Topics include:

  • All about me
  • What does it mean to be British
  • Healthy Lifestyles: Body and Mind

These topics allow teachers to plan exciting, creative and fun experiences based on the children's interest, ideas and development stage.

In Year 1, you will see children engaged in active learning, hear the buzz of excitement and see happy, joyful learning through play and support from adults.
